Description

Sex was why South African 800m runner and Olympic gold contender Caster Semenya was arguably the world’s most talked-about athlete a few years ago. Was she truly female or male? In 2010, after extensive medical testing, the International Association of Athletics Federations cleared Semenya to continue competing in women’s races, and this summer, she may well take first place at the 2012 London Olympics. Winning gold would be a singular victory on the track... would it have other meaning outside the stadium?

On Wednesday, August 1st, KPCC’s Oscar Garza talks about sex and gender in sports and outside the realm of athletics. Along with guests Jennifer Doyle (professor, UC Riverside Literature) and Cyd Zeigler, Jr. (cofounder, Outsports.com), we’ll talk about intersex runner Semenya’s story, and explore how men’s/women’s categories in sport are reflected in our social and cultural categories in everyday life.

Admission is FREE, but RSVPs are required.
